Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan: Following the centuries-old traditions of friendship and good neighborliness

Today, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev arrives on a working visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan.

This visit will be the 18th Summit of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in November 1992.

Kazakhstan is an important Central Asian partner for Uzbekistan. Relations between the countries are built on historical closeness of the peoples, mutual political and economic interests, as well as increasingly strengthening multifaceted relations in such areas as economics, finance, environment, science, agriculture, culture, education, sports and others.

The result of intensive political dialogue and constructive cooperation at all levels, has become a solid legal base consisting of 173 two-way nature of the documents. Chief among them are the Treaty of eternal friendship between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Republic of Kazakhstan (1998.) Agreement on strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and the Republic of Kazakhstan (2013.).

Countries maintain regular contacts in a number of international organizations – the UN, SCO, CIS, IFAS and others. This gives an opportunity to discuss pressing issues, develop common approaches to their solution, enhance existing potential of cooperation in various spheres.

Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan occupy similar positions on a wide range of issues related to regional and global security, political, economic and social development, adhere to the principles of equality, mutual benefit and respect for each other’s interests.

Due to the policy of good-neighborliness and mutual respect between the two countries economic and trade cooperation is actively developing. At the end of 2015 the bilateral trade amounted to more than 3 billion US dollars, including exports – 2.2 billion US dollars, imports – 0.85 billion US dollars. Uzbekistan exports to Kazakhstan fruits and textile products, vehicles, services, fertilizers, building materials and more. In turn, our country imports from Kazakhstan ferrous and nonferrous metals, fats, oils of animal or vegetable origin.

Discovery and development of trade-economic potential contributes to the joint intergovernmental commission on bilateral cooperation between Uzbekistan and the Republic of Kazakhstan, at the regular meetings, which addresses current issues of economic cooperation. At the end of the fifteenth session of the Commission, which took place on March 10-11, 2016 in Astana, the sides agreed to continue practical implementation of earlier agreements in order to increase the volume of mutual trade and the further development of cooperation in transport and communication sphere.

Another important factor in the implementation of a fruitful partnership in the economic sphere is the work of joint ventures and foreign enterprises. Currently Uzbekistan totals 206 enterprises with the participation of Kazakh capital – 171, and 35 joint enterprises with 100% Kazakhstan capital. 3 companies are accredited in Kazakhstan, carrying out their activities in areas such as trade, transport and logistics, and other services, construction materials and consumer goods. In turn, it acts on the territory of Kazakhstan 151 enterprises created with the participation of our country.

A special place in the relations between the two countries are engaged in cultural-humanitarian direction.

According to statistics, in Uzbekistan live hundreds of thousands of ethnic Kazakhs. In order to preserve the culture and identity of which in the country there are Kazakh cultural center, Kazakh theaters, national folk and pop ensembles. At the Writers’ Union of Uzbekistan established the Council for the Kazakh literature. In recent years, published more than 50 books Kazakh writers and publicists.

In our country also open schools with the Kazakh language learning. In addition, for higher and professional education in the Karakalpak State University and a number of pedagogical universities of the country created the Department of the Kazakh language and literature is taught in the Kazakh language.

Between scientific and educational institutions of the two countries there is an active exchange of teaching materials, teachers, students.

As part of the exchange in the sphere of culture and art master from Uzbekistan Hunarmand regularly participate in organized in Almaty Central Asian fair of artisans. The art galleries and museums of Astana, Almaty and other cities held exhibitions of works by famous Uzbek artists. Ongoing tours in Kazakhstan musical and theater groups from Uzbekistan. Uzbek filmmakers submit their feature films in the competition screenings of film festivals held in Kazakhstan.

In turn, the Kazakh cultural figures are regular participants of the International Music Festival “Sharq taronalari”, held in the city of Samarkand, and other major cultural events organized in our country. This collaboration once again confirms the spiritual and cultural closeness of our peoples.

Establishment of the monument to the founder of Kazakh literature Abai Kunanbayev on one of the main streets of Tashkent, which bears his name, was another clear confirmation of deep respect for spiritual and cultural heritage of the Kazakh people.

In this context, with full confidence we can say that regular personal contacts of Heads of State and their friendly and fruitful, contribute to the dynamic development of bilateral relations and are a guarantee of the further strengthening of regional stability, the potential disclosure of Uzbek-Kazakh cooperation, as well as maintain the centuries-old traditions of good neighborliness and friendship between our countries and peoples.
