Uzbekistan has created a favorable environment to preserve and increase populations of rare species of animals and plants. This is one of the most important insights of the Environmental week held in the Republic in conjunction with World Environment Day.
The experts of the State Committee of Uzbekistan for nature protection shared information about the work underway in the country in this field.
– Rare species of plants and animals are under the protection of two key conventions – on biological diversity and on international trade of endangered species of wild fauna and flora under threat of extinction. Our country has acceded to these conventions in 1995 and 1997 respectively, – said the representative of the Committee.
Import and export of such objects in accordance with the Convention is governed by special permission of the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for nature protection and the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Regular seminars and raids are underway jointly with the State Customs Committee of the country for training and advice on the control of import and export of objects of flora and fauna, including the elimination of illegal activities in accordance with national laws and international conventions.
In accordance with commitments before the international community, Uzbekistan has created farms for keeping and breeding of rare and endangered animals. As of today, there are 22 farms for breeding exotic animals, 19 farms for breeding of wild animals, 13 zoos and 1 mobile zoo.
A five-year programmes of action for the protection of the environment are under implementation in the Republic. The last one is adopted for 2013-2017.
