Uzbekistan is intending to significantly increase the share of domestic cotton processing
In the next few years Uzbekistan is intending to significantly increase the share of domestic cotton processing, as well as the number of full-cycle textile complexes. Experts predict that by 2019 the volume of exports of light industry products will exceed $1.5 billion.
Domestic light industry ranks among the independence-born sectors. A country with a huge capacity of raw materials processed only 7% of cotton in 1991, while last year the index reached 35%. Hundreds of small and large enterprises, specializing in the production of fabrics, knitted fabrics, clothing, and various other articles, have been commissioned. As a result, the share of light industry in GDP reached 3.8%, 26.2% in the volume of industrial production, and over 44% in non-food consumer goods.
The dynamics has no limits. 92 industrial enterprises with export capacity of $215.8 million and worth a total of $575.3 million have been commissioned in the light industry of Uzbekistan over the last three years alone. They provided more than 11,600 jobs. The O’zbekyengilsanoat Company is planning to increase the output by 20% by the end of 2015.
“This year, the light industry enterprises of Uzbekistan expect producing goods at 3.4 trillion soums, including consumer goods at 1.4 trillion soums (with 25% growth). By 2020, the output volumes in the sector are estimated to grow to 6.9 trillion soums. For example, the production of fabrics will reach 459.2 million square meters (now – 296 million sq. m),” said O’zbekyengilsanoat Deputy Head of Technical Policy and Forecasting Avaz Mukhitdinov (currency rates of CB RU from 01.07.2015 1$= 2555.60 soums).
“By 2020 the company intends to increase the production of cotton yarn by 2.5 times, fabrics – by 2.8, silk fabrics – 2.7, non-woven fabrics – 1.5, knitted fabric – by 2.7 times. The manufacture of articles with high added value is expected to grow significantly too: garments – by 3.2 times, knitwear – by 2.1 times.
These goals will not be easy to achieve,” continues Avaz Mukhitdinov. “However, all the necessary tools and mechanisms are at our disposal. This suggests that in the coming years we are going to launch additional capacities, expand and upgrade the existing manufactures, advance skills and qualification of our workers. The work has already started. Since the beginning of 2015, we have commissioned 15 enterprises and created about 2,000 new jobs. Under the program for 2015-2019 we plan to build more than 70 new enterprises that will primarily promote the intensification of cotton processing up to 60%. It is also planned to create about 12,000 new jobs.”
The commissioning of 18 enterprises specializing in production of a wide range of textile articles is scheduled for this August. The total cost of projects exceeds $99 million. The new facilities will provide over a thousand new jobs. The annual export capacity of enterprises is expected to exceed $43 million.
New industrial facilities will be evenly distributed in regions. Enterprises will be located mainly in labor-intensive areas that previously lacked the facilities of this kind. Various branded chains will be concurrently established in the domestic market for selling finished goods.
Exports remain the industry’s priority. For example, the cutting edge high performance technologies have increased exports by 120 times, which reached $1 billion in 2014 against $7 million in 1991. Uzbek goods are exported to 50 countries.
O‘zbekyengilsanoat dealer units work on expanding the geography of exports by studying foreign markets, their capacity and needs. The domestic light industry produces about 700 kinds of product designs, annually updates 10-15% of their total number, investing about 150 billion soums. Such an approach is a key to the manufacture of competitive goods in the domestic and foreign markets, which will be used to increase the scope of exports to $1.5 billion by 2020.
Presently, the spinning capacity exceeds 450,000 tons, weaving – 296 million square meters, knitted fabrics – 90,000 tons, garment and knitwear production – 270.2 million items. This sector of economy has attracted $2.2 billion of foreign investments and implemented 180 major investment projects.
