The former port harbor of the Aral Sea, once one of the largest reservoirs in the world, is now called the “Ship Graveyard”. Its appearance testifies to the Aral tragedy.
According to available data, by the beginning of 2000, there were about 300 vessels on the dried-up part of the seabed. Most of them were scrapped. At the “Ship Graveyard” – in the “Open Air Museum Complex of Ships”, about 15 ships are exhibited. Local and foreign tourists, who visit Karakalpakstan with a desire to get acquainted with the history of the Aral Sea and its current state, visit this museum complex.
