It was attended by delegations of Central Asian countries – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Russia, representatives of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Aga Khan Development Network.
Issues of strengthening cooperation in Central Asia on strengthening control over the trade in narcotic drugs were discussed at the meeting.
Memorandum of Understanding on regional drug control cooperation in Central Asia was signed in 1996 in Tashkent by representatives of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. In 1998, Russia and the Aga Khan Development Network joined the document, in 2001 – Azerbaijan. As a result, the geography of cooperation in the fight against various threats has expanded, and the scope of activities has been enriched with new content.
To date, Parties to the Memorandum are carrying out regional and international cooperation within the framework of this document and international legal framework.
Director of the National Information and Analytical Center for Drug Control under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan Olim Narzullayev, Regional Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Central Asia Ashita Mittal and others addressed the event.
As it was noted at the meeting, today’s event creates an opportunity for coordinating actions in the fight against trade, illicit drug trafficking, various threats, developing mutually beneficial measures.
The meeting continued with a roundtable discussion with participation of experts and was conducted in a businesslike and constructive spirit.
Members of delegations exchanged information on national counteraction to transnational crime, trade in narcotic drugs. The need for joint activities aimed at ending the proliferation and transit of narcotic drugs in the region was noted.
A number of issues on the agenda were discussed, priorities for regional cooperation were outlined at the event.
