For Uzbekistan, religion has always had a special significance. It was not surprising that, when there was a decline of its existence, the Soviet government loosened control in the Central Asian country. As a result, the underground religious schools started appearing, some of which later became major Islamic centers. Particularly this process occurred in the Fergana Valley – a conservative region, proved to be very susceptible to Islamic fundamentalism.
